About the role
The Level 3 Apprentice – Low Carbon Heating Technician will support the Field Engineering team in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of renewable and energy-efficient heating systems, such as air source heat pumps and hybrid systems. This role combines hands-on work across live sites with structured training delivered one day per week at London South Bank Technical College, working toward the Low Carbon Heating Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.
Most of the apprenticeship is spent working, you’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
Duties and responsibilities
Installation and Maintenance
- Assist in the installation of low carbon heating systems (e.g. air and ground source heat pumps, associated pipework, and controls).
- Support with maintenance activities including system servicing and efficiency checks.
- Contribute to the commissioning and performance testing of systems in domestic settings.
Technical Support
- Aid in identifying and diagnosing faults within heat pump systems and supporting infrastructure.
- Follow technical documentation such as schematics and manufacturer specifications under supervision.
- Accurately record technical data and report issues or irregularities encountered during site visits.
Compliance and Safety
- Adhere to health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Follow safe working practices when using tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Support proper site housekeeping and ensure compliance with company policies.
Learning and Development
- Attend all scheduled training at London South Bank Technical College as part of the apprenticeship.
- Complete required coursework, assessments, and portfolio work to meet the standards of the Level 3 qualification.
- Engage proactively with mentors and supervisors to build practical and professional competence.
Customer Interaction
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with residents, clients, and site representatives.
- Represent the company in a professional, courteous, and responsible manner on all assignments.
Location and working hours:
- 4 days on-the-job working + 1 day at college per week.
- 30-minute lunch break & two 15-minute breaks (unpaid) during each working day.
- Office location: Moorgate, London (WeWork)
- Training Provider: London South Bank Technical College.
- Field-based role with travel to customer properties.
- Manual handling and physical tasks required.
Required skills and attributes:
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
- GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent).
- Interest in sustainable energy, heating technologies, and mechanical systems.
- Willingness to learn and a positive, proactive attitude.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and maintain attention to detail.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to travel to various work sites and to the training provider.
Ideally, candidates will also have:
- Some practical experience in plumbing, heating, or construction (e.g., work experience, part-time work, or school project).
- Basic understanding of environmental sustainability and low carbon technologies.
